Dua Karavi and Chanta

Just a few minutes ago i got a email from a sunni friend who pointed to an anti ismaili website. It was actually from an ex-ismaili. His name is Akber Ally Merahlly who left the ismaili faith because of political reasons. This filth and a stain in the muslim community doesnt has one clue what ismailism is about but attacks the faith any ways. Two things that caught my eyes on was about his topic on Dua Karavi and Chanta. First and formost it is important to not that the quran talks about repentance.

Say: O My servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the mercy of Allah; for Allah forgives all sins; for He is oft forgiving, most merciful. Turn ye to the Lord (in repentance) and bow to His will before the penalty comes to you; after that ye shall not be helped."
[Sura 39: 53-54]

The quran has specifically stated that we must repnet for our sins. This can be done any way he or she wishes to do it. The way ismailis repent for their sins is going to Jamat Khana every day and after jamat Khana going to the Mukhi/mukhani ma, kamadha/kamadi ma (these are religious leaders in charge of the prespective jamat khana). These people are choosen by the Imam Of The Time. When one goes up to them they give some money. The money can be little as a penny. Once the money is in the hands of the leader the person who is asking for forgiveness says the following lines

Tobho Tobho Taksidar, Bando Sirta Paguneghar, Ya Shah Tu Bakshie Bakshan Haar. I repent, I repent, I am sinful from head to toe, O lord (allah) please forgive me, you are the forgiver of sins.

The leader then says May allah forgive your sins. Note that it say "May allah" and not "allah has forgiven your sins". THe Chanta is done the same way but instead water is splashed on the face. Note the splashing of the water does not means that the water washes the sins away but it is symbolic. Remember water is a purifying substance. Also doesnt negates one from Wadhu (please refer to the Wadhu blog for more info). Nor does the water symbollically washes the sins away.

Basically the chanta and the Dua Karavi is done to remind us that we must repent

is that really necessary? i understand asking someone to make dua for you, but to have a process where u give them money (albeit it can be a penny) and in return they make dua for you, seems wrong.

May I ask if you are an IIS or ITREB Scholar? Have you been trained by either of the above organizations? I would like to ensure that your sources are authentic.

@Kamran, in response to your post, I just watched a program on GEO Pakistan Television, whereby they were collecting money for the Pakistan Flood Victims. However, as the people, were donating, they were asking the Mufti for Du'a for their grandparents, parents, studies etc. The money transaction was present and then Du'a was given. In the program's case the higher the amount the more Du'a you received and if the donation was less then they received less Du'a. Just sharing what i saw.

Tobho Tobho Taksidar, Bando Sirta Paguneghar, Ya Shah Tu Bakshie Bakshan Haar.

You did not correctly translate this. Shah refers to Aga Khan, not Allah. Nizari Ismailis believe Aga Khan can forgive sins.

Here is the correct translation:
I repent, I repent, I am sinful from head to toe, O lord (AGA KHAN) please forgive me, you are the forgiver of sins.

I have heard that certain Nizari Ismailis also say "Ya Ali tu Rahem Kar" instead of "Ya Shah...", as well, which means "O Ali Have Mercy on Me".

Also, Nizari Ismailis say "Ya Ali tu Rahem Kar" in unison during certain majalis ceremonies - proving that they seem mercy from Ali (RA) or Aga Khan (they view these two interchangeably) instead of Allah.

Barã´ah
9:103 Take alms out of their property, you would cleanse them and purify them thereby, and pray for them; surely your prayer is a relief to them; and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
Khuth min amwalihim sadaqatan tutahhiruhum watuzakkeehim biha wasalli AAalayhim inna salataka sakanun lahum waAllahu sameeAAun AAaleemun
Prophet, as Calipha of Allah, used to accept Zakat, cleanse (forgive sins), purify and pray for the people.

And as per above 9:103,
Ismailis believe "imam of the Time" is Caliph of Allah

As-Saalam alaikum

Just a quick question on the above words said when making Repentance in the Ismaili Jamat Khanas...Is the Shah meaning Aga Khan Forgiver of Sins or the Almighty ALLAH Exalted is He?

JazakAlllah
